U.S. two-year Treasury yields skidded below 4.80% on Friday for the first time since September 1, with 10-year yields dropping under 4.40% to September lows too. Crude has now lost almost 25% in just six weeks - aided by the U.S. gradually lifting oil sanctions on Venezuela. The Labor Department said import prices fell a whopping 0.8% in October, the most in seven months amid a broad decline in the costs of goods - deepening the annual deflation of import prices to as much as 2.0%. Even though the dollar (.DXY), , is taking a hit from the plunge in U.S. Treasury yields, the drop in sovereign borrowing rates was mirrored across the world in Europe , even Japan . Mirroring the softening demand picture elsewhere, British retail sales volumes fell unexpectedly in October as stretched consumers stayed at home.

KOLKATA, Nov 16 (Reuters) - South Africa coach Rob Walter is "incredibly proud" of the team's fight despite their semi-final loss against Australia at the 50-overs World Cup and does not think the "choker" tag applies to them. South Africa could not progress beyond the last four of the showpiece event again but they played impressive cricket to finish the group stage as the second-placed team. While a combination of bad luck and nerves stymied them in previous World Cups, South Africa fought tooth and nail this time defending a small total before Australia eked out a narrow three-wicket win. Australia got off to a flyer but South Africa kept taking wickets regularly to inject fresh drama into the contest and their lion-hearted bowlers simply refused to throw in the towel. For me, a choke is losing a game that you're in a position to win," the coach said.

However, the rally has run out of steam as several Fed policymakers this week pushed back against market expectations that the central bank will begin cutting interest rates soon. "The market got carried away regarding how soon it thought we would be seeing interest rate cuts being delivered. "But that was never the case and comments from various CB (central bank) officials this week have very much opened eyes to this." On the earnings front, shares of Walt Disney (DIS.N) rose 4.1% in premarket trade after the entertainment company exceeded Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit on higher attendance at its Shanghai and Hong Kong theme parks. MGM Resorts International(MGM.N) added 3.5% on beating third-quarter estimates for profit and revenue as the casino operator benefited from easing pandemic restrictions.

That drop has helped fuel a stock rally that has given the S&P 500 (.SPX) and the Nasdaq (.IXIC) their longest streak of gains in two years through Wednesday's close at eight and nine sessions, respectively. Still, comments from several central bank officials over the past few days left the door open for additional hikes, causing some uncertainty among investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) fell 40.33 points, or 0.12%, to 34,112.27; the S&P 500 (.SPX) gained 4.40 points, or 0.10 %, at 4,382.78; and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) added 10.56 points, or 0.08 %, at 13,650.41. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.3-to-1 ratio on the NYSE while on the Nasdaq declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.7-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq. The S&P 500 posted 17 new 52-week highs and eight new lows while the Nasdaq recorded 53 new highs and 206 new lows.

In 2019, Andy Beshear eked out an upset win for governor of Kentucky, a startling victory for a Democrat in a state that Donald Trump had won in 2016 by around 30 percentage points. But with his re-election on Tuesday, Mr. Beshear, 45, showed that he was more than just lucky. He again won the cities of Louisville and Lexington handily, but also won small rural counties across the state that he had lost four years earlier. The victory followed an aggressive and well-funded campaign that could serve as a blueprint for Democrats across the country, who for years have seen rural states like Kentucky slipping ever further out of reach. It also could position Mr. Beshear as a candidate for national office in 2028 and beyond.

The oil price slide was helped by signs from Israel that it's open to pauses in the Gaza fighting. The typically hawkish Minneapolis Fed boss Neel Kashkari insisted it was still too early to take another rate hike off the table. Elsewhere, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its policy interest rate again, as expected, by another quarter point to a 12-year high of 4.35%. Andy Beshear, defying the deep conservativism of his state of Kentucky and equally deep unpopularity of President Joe Biden, won reelection to a second term Tuesday, beating Republican Daniel Cameron. "This is to you, Daniel Cameron: To tell a 12-year-old girl she should have the baby of her stepfather who raped her is unthinkable. Daniel Cameron would give us none," the young woman says in the ad. Cameron amended his anti-abortion position to include exceptions for rape and incest, but that argument appeared not to sway Kentucky voters. A year ago, Kentucky voters defeated a referendum that would have explicitly denied the state constitutional right to an abortion.

BRAGA, Portugal, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Real Madrid's Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham scored in each half to secure a 2-1 win at Sporting Braga and keep their side three points clear atop Champions League Group C on Tuesday. Wasteful Real missed several chances to extend their lead mainly through Vinicius who was often caught offside playing on the shoulder of an extremely high Braga defensive line. But they managed to score again in the 61st when Rodrygo beat the offside trap and found Vinicius ghosting behind the defence on the left. "We had to suffer more than expected in the end but it's normal to suffer away from home, especially in the Champions League," Vinicius Jr told Movistar Plus. Real are top on nine points ahead of Napoli, who eked out a 1-0 win at bottom side Union Berlin with the Germans yet to earn a point.

GOP lawmakers did select Steve Scalise as their nominee for the job that is second in the line of presidential succession on Wednesday. The worsening debacle in the House follows the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week by eight Republicans voting with Democrats. But some GOP leaders are irritated that the jockeying is distracting from the imperative to find a speaker. He was still well short of the 217 votes – a majority of the current House – needed to claim the speakership on the floor. “He has no path to 217,” one top House Republican said on condition of anonymity.

Researchers said on Monday the solar storm - the sun sending a large burst of energetic particles into space - occurred 14,300 years ago. Nine such extreme solar storms now have been identified using tree-ring radiocarbon evidence, with the most recent in 774 and 993 AD. The largest directly observed solar storm, called the Carrington Event, occurred in 1859, wreaking havoc on telegraphs and creating a nighttime aurora so bright that birds sang as if the sun was rising. The effects of solar storms can disable electronics. "If similar solar storms happened today, they could be catastrophic for society, as we are so reliant upon technology," Heaton said.

Casino stocks are slumping – and that could be bad news for the US economy. Top investor Jim Chanos has touted the Las Vegas strip as a potential economic indicator in the past. Las Vegas' next big test will be the third-quarter earnings season, with most casino operators expected to announce their results over the next month. CNN —As the dust settles on the tenure of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there are lessons the Republican Party should learn. As the Republican caucus considers its next steps, they must choose a leader whose stewardship signals a clear break from the past. Here are the ways that Trump triggered the events that fueled McCarthy’s downfall. In 2022, Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, a former football star whose controversial candidacy was fueled by his connection to the former president, met the same fate. Fast forward less than a year and Trump was nowhere to be found when McCarthy’s fate as speaker hung in the balance.

In the meantime, House Republicans have no clear leader heading into next year's election as they cling to a razor-thin majority. The leadership fund will shift its alignment to follow the new House speaker once one is elected. McCarthy visiting a district could often be a major draw, juicing fundraiser proceeds, though that’s a role any new House speaker can grow into. “That’s where McCarthy has crushed it,” said Cam Savage, a longtime Republican strategist who works on House races. “After this week’s chaotic episode, House Republicans have basically upgraded to a Disney fast-pass in their never-ending roller coaster ride to the radical right,” said Viet Shelton, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the party’s House campaign arm.
